Expert Reviews of Nokia N95 (Unlocked)
Expert Rating: 3.5
by Joni Blecher -- October 29th 2007
The Nokia N95 is a lot of things: a world phone, a 5-megapixel camera, a music player, a connection workhorse (IR, USB, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth), a portable video player, and a smartphone. And its all these things in a compact, fun-to-use, lightweight package. While this cell phone has so much going for it, we should mention that there is one thing its missing: decent battery life.

The Nokia N95 has lived up to the hype of being a first class camera phone, plus has provided so much more. The 5MP camera does great on the go and close up. The added light makes sure you don't miss a moment just because you are in a low lit area. I love that I can upload pics directly to my Flickr account. As for using it as a cell phone, I have not had any problems and T-Mobile plays nice. I've also found the email, calendar, tasks, GPS, and internet quite useful. And as a plus for my kids, there are games already loaded.

Was impressed at first, however, after some useage the N95 has some quirks. The button for viewing photos is absolutely in the way when using the phone, it makes just holding the phone without pressing this button a problem. Battery sometimes drains rapidly. Phone also hangs up if the wrong button is pressed, the only way out is to remove the battery to restart the phone. Having LAN internet connection is a plus along with the increased speaker volume.

My N95 has all the features that you could ask for. I am very pleased with it. There are areas for improvement. The GPS takes way too long to acquire its satellites. The range on the WLAN is significant less than a my PC. My Sling rarely works outside of my home network, where the box is installed, yet I can log on to it with my PC. The email was very simple to setup, just like Outlook. It would, however, be nice if one could delete the email entirely off the phone without needing to delete off the server as well. I am still discovering new uses for it. I really enjoy the MP3 player function.

I like the Nokia N95 a lot but the whole reason I got it was the camera function. I was expecting digital camera quality photos, and I was very, very disappointed with the high image compression and noise/ off-colored pixels. one out of 3 pictures are blurry. However, it seems all phone camera's have this issue no matter how many mega pixels it is. The Tv out doesn't work, it shows the picture but it is constantly scrolling vertically and it is black and white. I don't know if there is a setting for NTSC and PAL. GPS is nice and all the different functions of the phone are nice, I just wished it took better pictures :(

Much improved over the "Euro/Can" version. Longer battery life and sufficient memory to run almost any number of apps. This OS version seems to get GPS fix faster as well. I'm especially enjoying the free Slingbox client.
